Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
