Fierce Gales Cause Tens of Thousands Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals urged to stay indoors as strong winds strike the region.

Severe gales reaching speeds of up to 155km/h (96mph) have caused around 90,000 properties without power and led officials to call off over 100 flights, according to regional news sources.

The gales are affecting the entire South Island and southern parts of the northern region, according to the national weather agency.

New Zealand authorities have issued infrequent severe gust advisories - the top caution category - in core zones including these major districts.

Residents have been advised to remain inside, avoid travel, and make arrangements for further electricity and network failures.

Broad Impact and Crisis Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting residences mainly in the southern region, while officials state that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Regional news have indicated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, while trees and electricity poles have been brought down by the winds.

In Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being impacted by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a woman was blown onto approaching vehicles on a street by a strong gust of wind, in a moment that was captured in a popular vehicle recording.

Aircraft services to and from the city have been halted due to the gusts, while various routes and public facilities are not operating.

Simultaneously Canterbury officials have announced a emergency situation, to support disaster response efforts.

Strike Action Alongside Extreme Weather

The wild winds on Thursday come as numerous of educators, medical professionals and government employees are participating in what has been described as a "mega strike", demanding better pay and working conditions.

But the intense climate has pressured them to change certain arrangements, with several external protests moved indoors or called off.

Similar gusts are affecting the neighboring country, causing a heatwave to the remote areas.

Agencies have announced fire bans for apprehension regarding wildfires.
