The UK government has placed eleven more destinations to its official warning list concerning the threats of industrial alcohol contamination from adulterated spirits.

This updated advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the incidence of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.

Only recently, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to several notable cases like the tragic death of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that even tiny quantities of methanol can cause permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical often employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not intended for drinking.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the purification method.

Yet in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to reduce expenses, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to detect.

Official Guidance for Travelers

Foreign Office representative the minister emphasized that every traveler should recognize the symptoms of methanol poisoning.

"When you are drinking spirits overseas, choose reputable establishments and avoid local brews or free shots," the official advised.

"Should anything appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's much more severe than typical or blurred eyesight – get medical help right away."

The complete list of countries noted as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol contamination currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
